How We Organized a Family Garage in Overland Park
Moving into a new home is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming very quickly.
Boxes pile up fast. Everyday items get scattered wherever there’s space. And the garage often becomes the temporary landing spot for everything that doesn’t yet have a home.
But this smart family thought ahead.
They were getting ready to move into a beautiful new home and wanted to start fresh with organized systems from the very beginning — especially in the garage. Instead of waiting until the space became cluttered and frustrating, they wanted functional systems set up right away that would support their family long-term.
And honestly, one of the best times to organize is right after you move into a new home.
What Does a Professional Garage Organizer Do?
Because this Overland Park family had just moved in, this project wasn’t about “fixing” years of clutter. They had already done an amazing job shedding anything they didn’t want before they moved.
It was about being intentional from the start.
Our goals were:
Create organized garage systems for every item that will live in the garage - systems that will be easy for a family to maintain long-term.
Allow for all three cars to park in the garage at the same time.
Evaluate how their family will use the space and create very specific zones for each category.
The family wanted the garage to feel functional, calm, and easy to navigate from day one.
Here’s where we started:
Why Hire an Organizer Right When You Move In?
One of the biggest advantages of organizing shortly after moving is that we can create systems before habits and clutter begins forming.
Instead of reorganizing an already chaotic space later, we were able to thoughtfully plan:
Where items should live
What storage solutions make the most sense
Which zones the family would use most often
How to maximize flow and functionality
Starting early often saves families time, money and stress down the road.
How Does the Organizing Process Work?
Step 1: In-Home Garage Consultation
We started with an in-home consultation. This was my chance to see the garage in person, measure the space, and ask questions, like:
What is the flow of how your family uses the items in the garage?
In your last home’s garage, what was working for you and what was not?
What items are less used in the garage? What items are most used?
Are there items in the garage that you don’t plan to keep? Or new items coming in?
Once we talked through some of these details, I gave the client a cost estimate and we discussed next steps and timeline.
Step 2: Organizing Plan + Product Recommendations
Once the client was ready to move forward, we began planning their garage. This step included:
A full blueprint of each wall of the garage.
Notes marking each category of item and where/how it will be stored.
A email with clickable links and prices for all product we recommended in the garage. We laid it out like a shopping list so our client could review and let us know what they would like to move forward with.
Here’s what that looks like:
Step 3: Organizing Day
As we unpacked boxes, we sorted everything into clear categories:
Sports equipment
Tools
Auto
Lawn & garden
Ladders
Shoes
Once categories were established, we began building shelves and adding bins to mirror our plans & blueprints.
Every garage system was designed specifically around this family’s daily routines. We implemented practical storage solutions that looked clean while still being highly functional for a busy family.
This included:
Clear labeled bins
Wall tracks that can easily be editable as needs change
Shelving systems
Bike storage that even kids can maintain
Easy-access drop areas for shoes & kids items
Our goal is always to create systems that feel realistic to maintain — not overly complicated or difficult to keep up with.
What Does an Organized Garage Look Like?
By the end of organizing day, the garage was fully functional, and looked amazing.
The biggest transformations included:
Clear, designated homes for every category.
Functional systems that supported everyday family life.
Space to comfortably park all three vehicles.
Faster access to frequently used items.
Most importantly, the family felt settled much faster because their garage already had systems in place.
